GOD BOWS TO MATH/TFF – “Smile for Silver, Sing For Gold”
Released November 23rd through MUZAI Records

God Bows To Math are finally putting something out… with a little help from Dunedin noise outfit TFF.

The long awaited split between two already cult favourites in New Zealand is almost over, as “Smile For Silver, Sing For Gold” contrasts the whole North Island/South Island divide, harmonious in it’s existence with each other, less that harmonious in it’s execution – even going as far as to cover each other’s songs in their own unique styles.

Mutual respect drew together one of Dunedin’s most exciting young bands TFF and one of Auckland’s hard-working journeymen God Bows To Math, finalizing what they both wanted to present with their first major release: something harmonious, on the very extreme fringe of the pop spectrum, yet with enough vitriol with it’s distorted, aggressive they wouldn’t be accused of “wimping out.”

“Smile For Silver, Sing For Gold” highlights God Bows To Math’s newer direction, with what some might state as more “grown up” lyrical context and themes within their material. It’s not a complete change from their earlier EP, “Depravity”, but it highlights how much the group have grown in the past six months. TFF’s brattiness contains orchestrations that rival their seniors. “Experimental punk” to it’s most concentrate form, through liberal usage of saxophone, Gameboy sequencers amongst a plethora of jagged, angular guitars, for some this is a snapshot of what to expect from the quartet’s forthcoming release.

The bands looked for someone who shared a similar perspective visually as they did musically – leading them to Paul Walsh, renowned for his previous illustrations, some notably for Auckland radio station 95bFM. Walsh’s concept (“something involved blood or urine) fit perfectly unsettling for the group and in a complete act of faith gifted the artwork to them free of charge – content with the whole idealism of the split.
