Robot Band Rocks the Mighty
Is this the future of music? Like a collaboration of the Terminator with Flight of the Conchords comes The Trons, a completely self playing robotic plugging in to Wellington’s Mighty Mighty, Thursday 19th February as part of Fringe 09.
The Trons are four robotic musicians with mechanical hands and fingers, electronic nerve circuits and trashed computer brains. It’s all salvaged parts and they play guitars, drums and keyboards just like any enthusiastic new band.
“They were built mainly out of old junk” says their manager and slave Greg Locke, “but it actually seems to help them sound good, more like how people play it seems!”
Built only a year ago, they have been touring flat out including a gig in Paris. Their Youtube video has had well over a million hits and there’s been articles in hundreds of websites and magazines, even being compared to the White Stripes and Kraftwerk.
“It’s really been a lot of fun” says Greg, “and the members haven’t been fazed by the attention at all… I just wish they could lug their own amps around”.
The Trons are a New Zealand creation and although mechanised musicians have been built before, this is the first ever robotic garage rock band.
All songs are original and were penned by their manager. The gigs include live video from small cameras mounted on the instruments to create an completely encompassing sound and vision experience.
The night, entitled “We are the Robots” will also include performances by Doteyes, Heat Like Me, DJ TvDisKo, and Mechadrummerman.
