SUNSHINE GIRLS

After compiling a rough list of songs that could be called my ‘2009 favvs’ for my fumblecore radio show, I remembered this track from Camp A Low Hum, and OH MY GUAVA FLAVOURED PALM TREE RAVE its good. SO. GOOD. The Ruby Suns have turned into this amazing dance band over the last year (anyone who has seen them play this year will attest to this), as they got their shit down in terms of playing Sea Lion live as a two-piece. Awash with tropical whistling samples, full-on drops and the most danceable vibes they’ve come up with yet, it’s easy to see why they’ve been using Don’t Trust The Dusty Fruit as their set closer recently. Their new tracks that were on display at their last show vibed towards ‘Animal Collectivey’ extended ambient dance tracks, which is fine, but should they could come up with anything remotely near the coconut-filled bliss of this track, I promise to submit myself to public beatings with tropical fruit. While this song plays.

Also, on my last tropical vibing note, Ducktails is coming in October!!!! His real name is Matt Mondanile, he plays in personal favv Real Estate, and has a startling number of side projects, of which Ducktails is probably the most well known. His songs are suited to plastic palm trees and $75 inflatable pools, pizza that gets wet when you cannonball into the pool with your floaties on, all covered in a trashy sheen that has me struggling not to include marijuana in the description of his sound. It’s unbelievablychilled, and his live performances kick the warped chill sideways and askew a notch. Or two. He’s known for remixing his sound live, slowly morphing his ancient keyboard’s sound out into the main melody of his album tracks, and transforming these recorded versions into loopy dreamscapes, prettily distorted stoner twins of the originals. Yet somehow, he anchors it all in with guitar sounds that almost border on grungey melodies. It’ll be the absolute best way to ease yourself out of spring slumber into the early summer waves of sun. YAY!
