Fungi Girls – Dystopic Vision

Not girls, dudes. Three of them. Again not the freshest of tracks but it’s still a breezy slice of guitar pop – light and dark tag in and out over the song’s course, at once breezy and fun but held in by guitar parts that don’t sound toooo far out of the realm of bands a lot less fun, like Crystal Stilts. The Jesus & Mary Chain umbrella remains above, but given that these tracks are coming from a bunch of kids who can hardly drive and are essentially basement jamming, their brand of lazy guitar melody comes off as far better than ‘just another band’. There’s a moment before the first verse kicks in that I swear I can hear some distant ‘woo-oooh’ behind the chiming guitar wall, but I’m not sure – it could just be a placebo effect from the dingy basement fun times going on. More melody than noise, Fungi Girls have released their debut, entitled Seafaring Pyramids, on Play Pinball! Records. I don’t know if I’m with Psychedelic Horseshit when he champions these guys as ‘the best new band in the country’ (plus I doubt you could get the album here), but nonetheless, these tracks are well worth the bandwidth.
