Whilst I’m sure this will elicit a lot of ‘but it’s just NOISE’ reactions, if you dug So We Drowned-ish Liars and other noisy beatmakers like Power Pill Fist or Fuck Buttons, you’ll hopefully find something to write home about in the jams of Bronx Kill, aka Oliver Blackmore, of Wellington. The name Bronx Kill is shared with a small stretch of water that joins the Harlem River to the East River in New York, which at low tide becomes so sparse and drained as to show car wreckages and other trash that resides at its bottom. That empty brutality translates well into the music of Bronx Kill, relatively simple, sparse electronic arrangements communicating some massively brutal machine beats and layers of blanket noise.
For such a wholly machinelike sound there’s a lot of emotion (well, RAGE at least) permeating into the ears between the sonic beatings of these tracks. BIG BIG BIG walls of electronic fuzz rain down on you relentlessly, giving way for half a beat, fooling you into a moment of clarity, before punching straight back into motion in feed your ailing bloated body alcohol until it fucking dies. Oh yes, the song titles? They range from the straightforward LA FOOD RIOTS to the angry-as-it-is-long die you fucking leather jacket black hoodie doc martens big tshirt knit cap fucking empty soulless void poser die die die die die. The electronic raging seems to be catching on, as The Mint Chicks repped Bronx Kill in their ‘highly reccd’ list of a few weeks ago. The third Bronx Kill EP, entitled Duty Rock, has just been released via the Bronx Kill blog, where you can find the rest of what’s been recorded as well. Weirdly soothing in its electronic angst, but without the screaming wrath of the likes of Fuck Buttons.
