With all these beachy bleachy lens-flared summer sounds flying around from the West Coast lately, it’s just had me hanging out for summer and wayfarers and road trips without real destinations. Adding to this is the sneaky leak of the new album from Best NZ Band Evah The Clean, entitled Mister Pop. It’s in a similar vein to bands like Real Estate that are ruling sooooo hard at the moment, but without the lackadaisical storytelling that Real Estate do so well. Lead single In The Dreamlife You Need A Rubber Soul was good, but not exactly the AMAZING song I keep expecting Kilgour & Scott to come up with 30 years into their career. Are You Really On Drugs comes much closer, with the one-and-a-half lines of lyric stretching over 170 seconds of hazy repeated chords and not-quite-foreground distorted intervals. It’s the beaches of SoCal as much as it ithe family bach, which I think is the massive appeal of this album for me – it’s the sound du jour doneĀ dreamily well, and done by NZ’s best. The album’s out in September (I think – plz dont kill me copyright people), just in time for it’s suited season. Put yr shades and let it hold you over until the sun comes back.
