FIFTIES GARAGING

Thee Oh Sees – Ruby Go Home

Thee Oh Sees – Meat Step Lively

Don’t think I’ve written about them on here but probably should have, given Thee Oh Sees propensity towards some pretty snappy 60’s glee-pop. It’s the latest project from John Dwyer, who is possibly The Man. He likes to play with his guitar up pretty high which is fine by me, it seems to enable him to let loose in any genre between death metal and acid-tinged punk, and across a pretty gargantuan amount of bands too. Let’s list them off. Coachwhips, Pink and Brown, Landed, Yikes, Burmese, The Hospitals, Sword & Sandals, Superpit, The Drums, The Trawgs, Zeigenbock Kopf and Dig That Body Up It’s Alive!

Yikes, right??? OH SHIT HE’S IN A BAND CALLED YIKES AS WELL.

Anyhow, his efforts are concentrated on Thee Oh Sees for the moment, which is just as well. Their music is pretty reminiscient of the cover of their album Help, with it’s hypercolour vibrancy and catchy demeanour. There are glimpses of psychedelia, yes, but the good-times rockabilly riffs all over tracks like Meat Step Lively reign it in to a 50’s rock and roll bar just around the corner from where Black Lips are pissing all over each other. It’s a pretty controlled racket, no white noise going on here, just careless fun, vocals snapping out over garage bliss while the ladies do the twist. Don’t let all those good feelings fool you, though – John Dwyer will FUCK YOU UP if necessary.

On a side note, they’re over in Australia for Meredith Festival in December – someone wanna get on it please?
