Oops, pretty busy atm but here is a quickfire list of some sweet new songs from the past little while! A little obvious, perhaps (Although I do see noone grabbed the incredible Small Black track from last week), but no less awesome for it:
First up, here’s a sampler from the forthcoming These New Puritans album (2010), called Hidden. The track is called We Want War, and calls on all manner of Swords Of Truth-esque intro sounds, then slamming everything back with some intense ‘tribal drumming’ (sigh), bringing the entire track into full view – it’s almost cinematic in how epic it is. Unfortunately a little too John Woo explosions-everywhere-oops-where’s-the-substance cinematic, but hey – it’s a new These New Puritans track – we have only to listen, and decide whether it’s going to be a hit or a miss on their next LP.
These New Puritans – We Want War
Spoon’s new album, Transference, has also just had all it’s details revealed, tracklisting, cover art, etc – but most importantly, here’s a rip of their first single, Written In Reverse. Their inimitable swagger takes a few Mustang Sally cues, and Britt Daniel even lets loose on the chorus with a vaguely screamable hook. It’s not quite as fun as, say, Don’t You Evah, but if anyone’s got enough charm to lift even their lesser tracks into the realm of quality, it’s Spoon.
Grizzly Bear themselves just got the remix treatment (twice!) by chillwaver Neon Indian, and now they’ve passed it forward, although in a pretty different fashion. They’ve taken on The Notwist’s Boneless, adding compressed percussion hits and small melodies from bass to synth to string here and there, before everything flows in together, making what is, upon the first few listens at least, a highly enjoyable version of the track.
