KURT VILE

Hello! Sorry, I’ve been mega lazy and not writing for a little bit. But to make up for it I have some rad jams from Kurt Vile! He’s a young man from Philadelphia who is the frontman for The War On Drugs, but more importantly signed to Matador in May for his solo work – YAY! Look at him up there, doesn’t he look peaceful and inviting? Ostensibly his work rubs off as 70’s throwback pop songs of the home-recorded variety, but his penchant for carefree melodies and unassailably cool strutting rhythms give him an edge over other revivalists. It’s laid back deckchair-style, but rather than come off as lazy home recordings from a careless bandwagon-kumper, these songs come across like meticulously crafted tracks made specifically for we, the careless home loungers. Article A: Freeway.

Kurt Vile – Freeway

A massively rad ‘why-isn’t-this-famous-yet’ track off his awesomely titled 2008 LP Constant Hitmaker, Freeway finds VileĀ  swooning up and above too-simple simple drum tracks and a swirling, uplifting guitar hook.

Kurt Vile – Don’t Get Cute

Here, Kurt Vile channels the best Beatles vibes through a Devendra Banharty kaleidoscope. His delivery rules, managing to make even lines like ‘Don’t get cut/you crazy little slut’ seem more like a come-on than a warning. Legitimately smooth.

His next album, Childish Prodigy (REALLY GOOD WITH ALBUM TITLES) is out sometime soon on Matador. Keep a look out for the best long-haired swoony nostalgia album of the year. Here’s a track from that forthcoming LP, where a Led-Zeppy acoustic number washed over with Vile’s vocals, sounding like a cooing Avey Tare. Supes good.

Kurt Vile – Overnite Religion

ok thank you good night
