Oh man. Oh man. I know he’s pretty polarising/prone to breakdowns/predisposed to ear pain, but oh man. Wavves came out with this new track Mickey Mouse, and wow. While the shitty distortion surrounding the vocals remains, everything else has leapt out of the basement and into an almost dancey new track. Compelling straight-up chord pummelling, drum beats that move out of the ‘beach punk’ tag into legitimate grooves, and wistfully nostalgic vocals that have me pulled in already. On repeat today, probably on repeat for awhile to come. Apparently that onstage breakdown quarter life crisis worked, because he’s not only reconciled with his drummer, he’s been working with Zach Hill (Heller). OH. MAN. It’s got the singalong wordless hooks that were oh so prevalent on his first album (2 V’s), and scraps the overly intense fuzz of release #2 (3 V’s). Given his press XPLOSION came from the latter, it’s probably a good idea if you a) get the first album and b) download this track.Yes, the outro goes too long and yes, ‘he’s not a good guitarist’, but please, for one moment, get off your shaden-freudeing high horse and give this song 5 minutes of your time. Hopefully, it’ll take up much more.
