SONGS OF 2009 #15-11

Since yesterday, I’ve become aware of some giant spiral time vortex loating over Norway. It’s apparently a failed nuclear missile test from Russia (the EIGHTH failed test at that too), but whatever. IT’S A TIME / SPACE VORTEX AND THE END IS NIGH.

And here are some more songs.

#15: Future of the Left – Arming Eritrea (Travels With Myself and Another)

Cynicism never sounded as good in 2009 as it did here . The slightly awkward, pounding rhythm ties in perfectly with low-end guitar snaps and Andy Falkous’ angsty barking of orders. One-upping Mclusky, the track takes on a massive scope in it’s second half, opening up to let Falkous properly let loose, instead of being restrained by stop-start rhythm. So, yeah. It’s pretty phenomenal.

#14: Street Chant – Scream Walk (7″)

‘Pop sensibilities’ , ‘GR8 GUITAR MELODIES’, ‘Fuck you buy my merch’, etc. It’s a really good song, but you already knew that.

#13: Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks (Veckatimest)

I get this stigma with songs that I’ve listened to consistently for a long time – and with this one, it’s been essentially nonstop since the Letterman performance last year. I get worried I’ll get sick of the song, or it’s radness will somehow be diluted by overplaying it, or something. Anyway, I put this on the other day, and remembered how incredible it is, how effortless everything seems. Plus, Victoria Legrand doing that high bit in the background is dreamier than I could have ever hoped it would be. I needn’t have worried.

#12: Male Bonding – Rehearsal Song (Split 7″ with PENS)

One of the best finds of the year for me. Thrashy riffs (without being thrash riffs) and graveyard vocals (well, on this track at least), all channeling that Husker Du energy into 2 and a half minutes of  punk-pop bliss. Having just signed to Sub Pop for a debut album (they only managed to release split 7″s this year), 2010 looks set to be the year of Male Bonding. I hope.

#11: HEALTH – Die Slow

As much as I love We Are Water, Die Slow trumps everything else on HEALTH’s album, Get Color. It’s got the blips and bleeps that almost tie in with Fuck Buttonsy rhythms (especially the opening salvo of Surf Solar), the simplest of simple dance beats, a verse / chorus structure that doesn’t get all torn apart in a maelstrom of screams – which I guess could be seen as a negative point, but when the track hits the crescendo in it’s chorus, you’ll know what I mean. Hands down, inarguably my most anticipated live show of 2010.

Merry Christmas everyone, its a great one for us here at Street Chant camp, we did secret santa today lol. Now we are at sitting around by the fire bitching about people on the internet as usual.

After much disgust and discussion (and a couple of glasses of egg nog lol) we have talked about our careers as indie rock musicians, and what future there is for us and and have to some decisions.. So it is with great regret and sadness that we are announcing that Street Chant as of the start of next year will be no longer. Our last show will be (of course) at Whammy bar on Feb 20 (Kurt Cobains birthday duh), with (of course) Wilberforces and Bandicoot (who we will ceremonially pass the torch to at the end of our set).

Who knows what the future might hold for us?

    Will Billie finally join Wilberforces??
Will Alex move ever closer toward the Wine Cellar experimental crowd?
Will Emily join new up and coming nu grunge band “Sidewalk Meese” in a desperate attempt to “catch the next boat”??

    We will see…..

We would like to thank all the peoples who’s email address’s we used to vote for ourselves on the BFM top 10 and all the bands we talk shit about, you guys made it all worthwhile.

    See you in the future.

    SC xo

We would like to make an official request to reserve one seat on said next boat. As near to the front as possible but not so near as to detract from the entertainment that is Bandicoot. We know our place.
