SONGS OF 2009 #20-16

OKAY!

Here are the next five tracks in my list of my favourite songs of 2009. It’s REALLY FUCKING HARD TO DO!

#20: Teen Sheikhs – Cracked

It’s no secret that I have a pretty massive boner for these Husker Du-aping bands coming out of London at the moment, and this track from Teen Sheikhs shows exactly why. Sloppy guitar solo, the simplest of catchphrases in ‘Cracked my head on the weekend’, and general early evening (or early morning) slacker party vibes. There’s not much to this song at all, but that’s probably part of why I like it so much – it’s endearing, in a drunk-as-fuck way.

#19: Pissed Jeans – False Jesii Pt. 2 (King of Jeans)

The best Sub Pop release of the year. Pissed Jeans grind all their angst into one sloth anthem here, lyrics like ‘I could tell a joke and make the whole room laugh / BUT I DON’T BOTHER’ leading into an unintelligible refrain of cavemen yelling, slammed along by vicious power chords and just so much arrogant, lazy swagger that it’s kind of hard not to stand up and take notice of how awesome this track is.

#18: Real Estate – Fake Blues (Real Estate)

This is the song that made me give up the dream of leaving the house for the beach and just want to buy a bike and find some bland suburban stretch and bike around for hours in the sun, every house the same, maybe a playground here or there, me bored but a really content kind of bored. This song would probably be playing the entire time.

#17: Atlas Sound – Walkabout (ft. Noah Lennox)

I keep having a hard time listening to Logos because every time I get to this song I keep repeating it. Over and over and over and over and over again. It’s so simple and clicks so well. It’s not quite triumphant but it’s definitely looking upwards and forwards, ‘a brighter tomorrow’ and all that jazz.

#16: Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Can’t Hear My Eyes (Single)

WOAH. I know it was released this year because it says so on amazon.com (well it probably does) but this track is straight out of a mid 70s pop daydream, slight slight twinkling chimes on the chorus, crooning vocals for his belle,  and the kick when the bass flips out (just a little) before the lines ‘because I need you’, all topped off with sexualised dreamy synths riding high over the chorus. Did I mention the saxophone solo? MAN. This should be higher on my list. It really should.

OKAY COOL SEE YOU TOMORROW?
