While I’m back onto, you know, actually writing on here (hi there, how you been, yeah I’m good thanks), here’s a new Surf City track that’s well worth your time. It’s been floating around for a little while (thanks to the ever onto-it dudes at rose quartz), exaltant distortion layers mingling with the Flying Nun guitar lines that made that EP of their so amazingly appealing. It seems a whole lot less focussed on the idea of ‘build-and-drop’ like tracks such as Mt Kill and Headin’ went for, instead channeling a sortof restrained ecstasy. They’re bored, sure, but it’s given them the perfect state of mind to continue writing pop gems awash with an 80’s noise sheen that, far from taking over the track, swings and shimmers back and forth in the background, letting the melodies sit front and centre. Pretty good, I gotta say.
On a par with the track (actually, possibly BETTER) is the news that Surf City are about to go over to CMJ and also play a whole bunch of dates with previously <3′d dudes Male Bonding, and a show or two with No Age and Best Coast! Actually kinda hope they don’t take too many cues from their touring buds since they’ve already got their Jesus & Mary Clean (sic lol) vibes down to a T. But still seriously amazing company for US shows, hopefully a precursor to even bigger things for them.
