THIS DRIP DROP

Some new Hawaaian AM goodness from Tonstartssbandht, this time in the form of 2nd LP for the year, Dick Nights. As per their debut An When, the music is generally a mindfucking melange of semi-audible chants through some pretty wild distortion all broken harmonies and frankenstein songs, patched together bits of melody held together by masking tape and homemade drum. This all manages to dip in and out of tracks like Tahiti Nui, which pulls out traditional-sounding tropical chanting over some rather Pacific ukelele jamming – think of it as the scrappily recorded cover of Tane Mahuta that got lost in the attic.  It doesn’t sound quite like it’s straight outta Hawaii, but it’ll take you close enough to smell the sand. Quite like the way the female vocals hold their own against the bands 2 core members, Andy and Edwin (BROTHERS!!), too.

And for some more good measure (I have been cripplingly lazy on this front), two tracks from their debut, An When. Midnite Cobras settles into familiarly amazing riffery bliss, all new Times New Viking-y in it’s execution and wailing vocals, catchy as, before dissolving down into shakeabout chants and fake curses being thrown around behind a mystic veil. Little April Showers may as well be an Oompa Loompa chant, repetitive in its refrain and haunting its way into your cerebral cortex -just one moment where their generally broken stomps and shattered-glass melodies come together for 3 minutes of relative coherence.

Tonstartssbandht – Little April Showers

Their albums are well worth hunting down, they vary so much more than they do across these three tracks, touching on all manner of semi-creepy echoing harmonies, and ranging from pretty muted drums-and-mumble chill jams right into amps-to-eleven-innit TNV blasting. Even a track of a girl (presumably high), responding to various questions over 90 seconds with only the name ‘Tonstartssbandht’. And some giggles. Yip, they make an intro track out of it. I DON’T KNOW HOW. Cool video too:
